As we navigate the complexity of engineering, product development, and digital transformation, it is easy to find ourselves trapped in a cycle of relentless problem-solving. It is the kind where the harder you push the further the answer seems to recede. What I have learned, slowly and somewhat against my own instincts, is that the most effective move is sometimes the least intuitive one – to simply step back and take a break. In my own experience, whether it comes through a walk, a mindless chore that occupies my hands but not my head, or even just changing the room I am sitting in, letting my mind wander tends to surface a fresh perspective. A creative solution shows up that was nowhere in sight an hour earlier. I think this comes down to something fairly basic about how our brains actually operate (they process information better when they are not bearing down under the pressure of an immediate task and the expectation of an immediate answer).

Across my tenure at various organizations, including my time leading innovation at Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, I have watched this happen again and again. The breakthrough idea emerges not in the heat of the meeting but in a quieter moment some time after it. By stepping away from the whiteboard or the keyboard, I give myself the mental space to rethink a strategy and notice the solution that was simply not visible while I was staring directly at the problem. I will admit that employing breaks as an actual strategy can feel counterintuitive, especially inside a results-driven culture where stepping away looks suspiciously like stepping out. And yet I have seen firsthand that when I treat my own mental well-being as part of the work rather than a competitor to it, the result is not only better solutions but a more collaborative and innovative dynamic across the whole team. So the next time you find yourself genuinely stuck on a problem, it is worth remembering that walking away is not the opposite of moving forward; sometimes, oddly enough, it is the way you finally do.
